- The main cover line is the largest text on cover
- Conveys attitude on the image
- Direct address with picture looking towards the reader
- Main coverline anchors the meaning of the main image
- Main coverline is usually two lines
- The coverlines have information about the contents
- The coverlines intrigue the audience
- Consistent typography
- Connotations of font reflect the target audience and subject
- Frame main image
- Positioning statement - by the title is the issue date and price
- Puff - something for free
- Buzzwords - exclusive
- Strip at bottom or top of cover - list of names, topics
