Preliminary Exercise



Here is a list of the codes and conventions about what a magazine cover includes:

  • The title is one word or letter(s)
  • Tilte is always at top left corner and covers full page width
  • One main image usually band/singer in madium close-up shot
  • Barcode is always bottom right on front because of the advert on the back
  • Always shows what else is included in the magazine
  • Shows the year issue was released
  • Unique font
  • Consistent colour scheme
  • The main cover line is the largest text on cover
  • Conveys attitude on the image
  • Direct address with picture looking towards the reader
  • Main coverline anchors the meaning of the main image
  • Main coverline is usually two lines
  • The coverlines have information about the contents
  • The coverlines intrigue the audience
  • Consistent typography
  • Connotations of font reflect the target audience and subject
  • Frame main image
  • Positioning statement - by the title is the issue date and price
  • Puff - something for free
  • Buzzwords - exclusive
  • Strip at bottom or top of cover - list of names, topics

  • Main image and smaller images
  • Page numbers on pictures anchor image to written contents
  • Use headings to divide up contents
  • Editorial and picture of editor
  • Subscription advert
  • Layed out in columns
  • White background
  • Title of magazine repeated
  • Issue date
  • Word contents
  • Arranged in - Page number text
  • The text is usually two or three words and have small subline text with it
  • Regular content
  • Features one off articles that appear in that article only
  • Page number at bottom aswell as Title, isue date, website address and contact details
